I tried to make a distinction between commenting for the purposes of getting backlinks and commenting for the purpose of contributing to sites, getting to know others, and generally "entering into the conversation." I don't think commenting for the sake of getting backlinks is worth doing. The author of the study that I refer to in the beginning of the article clearly thinks it IS worth it, but that has not been my experience. I think commenting to get to know others and for them to get to know you is very useful. And so using a tool that helps you to find relevant blogs might also be useful. Just one more thought on the link thing... Occasionally I find a blog where the comments end up in the sidebar of the blog with a live link. That will usually put you on every page of the blog. It is only temporary, but it has much more value than a link (usually a nofollow) at the end of a post. That kind of setup is worth watching for. Hi Richard,
